Key ideas based on Brian Johnson's PhilosopherNotes:
Suffering is a Part of Life. You will Never be at Rest.
Your goal is to embrace these challenges and mine the benefits.
You Will Never Bounce Back, but You can Evolve to Someone Better.
We have experiences in life that changes us; we can never be the same again.
Resilient people find healthy ways to integrate these experiences into their lives.
You Will Fail.
Those who are excellent at their work coexist with failure. But they attempt more, they attack more (i.e.: they take more action and build a well). Master lives atop a mountain of mistakes.
If every risk pays off, its probably not a risk.
However, only through challenging ourselves do we grow. Take rational risks.
“Resilience isn’t any different. Aristotle taught that we aren’t born with virtue; we’re born with the ability to practice virtue. Practice builds habits. Our habits are our character. When it comes to virtue, practice ‘makes a very great difference—or rather, all the difference.’”
Act "As If."
The way you act, shapes the way you feel.
Be less concerned about how we feel in a given moment and more focused on (and commit to) who we want to be.
“If we are intentional about what we repeatedly do, we can practice who we want to become. And through practice, we can become who we want to be.”
Controlling Your Breathing is the First Step to Self Control"
Inhale through your nose for a count of 4. Hold it for a seconds. Breath out through your mouth for a count of 4.
You Discover Your Purpose by Doing (i.e.: Action)
You discover your purpose via action, from trying things and pursuing excellence in all that you do. Purpose is forged not found (i.e.: this takes a lot of hard work and getting out of your comfort zone).
